Un paradoxe dont peu de personnes sentiront le vrai, et qui révoltera les autres (mais que vous importe à vous et à moi? premièrement dire la vérité, voilà notre devise), c'est que, dans les pièces italiennes, nos comédiens italiens jouent avec plus de liberté que nos comédiens français; ils font moins de cas du spectateur. Il y a cent moments où il en est tout à fait oublié. On trouve, dans leur action, je ne sais quoi d'original et d'aisé, qui me plaît et qui plairait à tout le monde, sans les insipides discours et l'intrigue absurde qui le défigurent. A travers leur folie, je vois des gens en gaieté qui cherchent à s'amuser, et qui s'abandonnent à toute la fougue de leur imagination; et j'aime mieux cette ivresse, que le raide, le pesant et l'empesé.
